Dunkirk town official: Hotel project ‘closed’

As far as Town of Dunkirk Zoning-Code Enforcement Officer Ryan Mourer is concerned, a Hampton Inn hotel project approved for Vineyard Drive is dead.

“I have heard absolutely nothing about the hotel for going on six months,” he told the Dunkirk Town Board at its February meeting.

Lake Erie Hotel, LLC was starting to get the necessary approvals in late 2018 to build a four-story, 47,000-square-feet hotel on vacant land next to Kirk’s Jewelers and a Comfort Inn also owned by the company. The Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency approved a sales and mortgage tax agreement for the new hotel.

The project was pushed back several times, but Lake Erie Hotel, LLC owner Jay Patel told the OBSERVER in December 2018 he wanted to break ground the following March.

Now, according to Mourer, if Patel and his company still want to build, they will have to start over.

“When they come to us in the future, it’ll be 100% starting over,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, the project is closed.”

In fact, as their documentation for the project is now nearly two years old, “there’s no sense in us storing it any further,” he added.
