Schaeffer’s term limit idea rejected in Pomfret

Term limits aren’t coming to the Pomfret Town Board anytime soon, judging by the chilly response to a comment from board member Christopher Schaeffer at the group’s January meeting.

“Term limits are something we ought to think about,” said Schaeffer. He said he already had had “informal discussions” with other board members about the matter.

That was news to board member Ann Eckman, who said, “This is the first I’ve heard of this.”

Town Attorney Jeff Passafaro then commented that he was not sure if the town could legally enact term limits for its board members, but he could research the issue — if board members wanted him to.

Town board member John Sedota made it clear he didn’t want him to.

“It’ difficult enough to get people to run for these positions,” he said, adding, “If somebody’s doing a good job and they’ve been there 12 years, you’re going to tell them they can’t run for re-election? … It should be up to the public. That’s why we have elections.”

Board members Brett Christy and Eckman said they agreed with Sedota’s stance, leaving Schaeffer with no support. “That’s that,” he said, and dropped the issue.
