Dunkirk finalizes graduation plans

Dunkirk High School has decided on graduation for the Class of 2020.

According to a news release issued Friday, the annual commencement ceremony will be Saturday, June 27, on the turf of Karl Hoeppner Field beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event will be simulcast to parents and families by Cable Access Channel 12. At the conclusion of the ceremony, graduates will proceed from the field for the traditional ringing of the bell and then disperse to meet their parents and families.

The school district will be providing detailed information regarding access to the broadcast, parking in and around the school and the ceremony this coming week.

The ceremony will follow all state and local health department regulations in place at the time of the event.

The principals listened to student and parent input regarding the ceremony and have crafted an event that meets the wishes of the students and families while honoring and abiding by the state and local health department guidelines currently in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced graduation for classes of 150 students would be allowed in the outdoors. Dunkirk High normally holds its ceremony in King Concert Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

This year, like the neighboring district of Fredonia, other plans needed to be made. Fredonia, last week, decided to move its ceremony to the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds. That will take place on Sunday, June 28.
