Fredonia looking at options regarding missing cherub

Photo provided by Dr. Daniel Reiff The cherub from the top of the west side fountain was taken in mid November.

The cherub that tops the historic fountain on the west side of Barker Common was stolen last November and still no leads have turned up regarding its whereabouts.

At the Fredonia Village Board meeting this week, a discussion was had over what to do next involving replacement if the original is never found.

“There’s an option of thousands of dollars to actually rebuild and replace it because it would have to be rebuilt by photographs so that’s anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 estimated,” Mayor Doug Essek commented.

“Valvo’s has a cherub or a vase that can be positioned up there for about $60-$70, just to have something there.”

Trustee Kara Christina questioned whether a fundraiser can be had to raise money for the replacement costs and that was a possibility that the village has been thinking about.

“We talked about possibly working up some sort of opportunity to raise funds to replace that.” Trustee Roger Britz supplied. “We’d probably need a more solid quote that way we have a goal.”

“I think that they should put something there,” Trustee James Lynden added.

Britz further commented that the fountains will remain off throughout the summer this year to allow for construction in the village park to take place; it’s likely they won’t be turned on at all this year. Britz did add however that to make the fountain look somewhat decent though the village should go ahead and look into more information about replacing it.
