No fireworks set for city skies on Fourth

The city of Dunkirk will not fire off any fireworks this year for Fourth of July.

Many in the region were curious as to whether without the park gathering the fireworks would still be ignited. However Tuesday, Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas officially shared that there would be no celebration of any sort.

Back on May 19, Rosas made the announcement that the Fourth of July celebration would be canceled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to social distance. He announced that in conjunction with the cancellation of the Great Lakes Offshore Grand Prix.

“The state is not recommending events as of right now that would have more than 10 people,” Rosas stated at the city’s Common Council meeting last month. “There is nothing that we can do to enforce social distancing with events of this magnitude. We have thousands of people who come in for the fireworks and we just won’t be able to control social distancing.”

Other events that have been canceled thus far included the Music on the Pier concerts up to the middle of July, the Juneteenth celebration, the Great Lakes Experience and the Camp Gross program. However, Rosas has asked staff to come up with a program where the city could provide lunches at one of the city parks.
