Peaceful rally to take place Saturday in Dunkirk

Three Dunkirk seniors are looking to bring attention to the Black Lives Matter cause this Saturday. Gabrielle Hart, Jericha Petrella and Yuribeth Castro are hosting a peaceful march in the city of Dunkirk at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“I’m really upset about what’s happening in the country to people,” Hart told the OBSERVER this week. “We want to send a message of peaceful solidarity within the city of Dunkirk.”

Hart and Petrella, who are both part black themselves, shared a meeting with Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas and Dunkirk Police Chief Dave Ortolano Monday that went really well in Hart’s opinion.

“Their intentions are to have a very peaceful demonstration,” Rosas mentioned at the Dunkirk Common Council meeting Tuesday.

“These are three very nice young ladies who are concerned with our community,” Ortolano added. “They just want to show their support for what’s going on in the country and to show support for our police department as well.”

The march will start on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkirk Pier and make its way to City Hall, where Rosas and Ortolano will both give speeches and then allow for various others to speak. There will be a brief stop off at Washington Park where people will kneel in respect for lives lost.

Hart asks that everyone wear black on this day.
