Schools making plans for graduation

Many area school districts are finalizing plans for graduation, as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that outdoor graduations were allowed beginning June 26.

Fredonia High School will be holding its 2020 graduation at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds on June 28 at 1:30 p.m. This information was announced to the seniors in a message sent by High School Principal Darrin Paschke. Final details of the ceremony will be discussed at the Board of Education meeting tonight.

In a message sent to the students by Principal Darrin Paschke to high school students, it was announced the ceremony will be taking place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28. Final details will be announced later, but Paschke also mentioned that for the first time in the district, members of the Class of 2020 will be able to decorate their graduation caps.

Like all students, senior class members have not been in school since the middle of March. The cap decoration is being allowed Paschke’s message also acknowledged the governor’s Sunday announcement on outdoor graduation limits to 150. This would allow the class to sit with appropriate distancing for the ceremony.

Previous graduations have been held in King Concert Hall. However, due to the COVID-19 concerns, the fairgrounds will allow for viewing by parents from vehicles.

Cassadaga Valley and Silver Creek have similar plans for their graduations, which will include a drive-in style ceremony, with the students being properly socially distanced while collecting their diplomas. Both ceremonies will take place on June 26 at 7 p.m., at the schools, with rain dates scheduled for Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend.

Brocton High School will honor their seniors with an outdoor ceremony, right in the High School parking lot on June 26. This event will be weather permitting, socially distanced, by invitation only, and families must stay in the car, to reduce the risk of spread.

On the Gowanda High School website, it was announced that individual commencement appointments are being made for June 15 through June 19 at Hillis Field, where seniors will be honored individually.

Westfield and Dunkirk High Schools have yet to announce their plans, which are expected to be released this week.
