In-person learning is slowly coming back to Fredonia Central Schools

OBSERVER Photo by Jo Ward Pre-K and kindergarten students have returned to in person learning at Wheelock School.

Things are going “extremely well” at the Fredonia Central School District, according to interim Superintendent Colleen Taggerty.

“We’ve streamlined things and we get the kids in and out comfortably,” Taggerty said. “So now we’re looking forward to getting third and fourth grade in next.”

Taggerty has been in meetings with the Return to School Committee they have setup there to discuss all the district’s back to school plans. So far, pre-K and kindergarten have returned to Wheelock on Sept. 14 with first and second grade having started Sept. 9.

“The kids are engaged and following all protocols,” Taggerty said. “And we are looking at what other districts around us are doing and getting an idea together for a hybrid model.”

Amy Piper, principal at Wheelock, couldn’t say enough about the families and the community as a whole.

“Everything is going wonderfully and we wouldn’t be here if the community, the parents and the students weren’t doing everything they were doing to keep people safe,” Piper said.

The school started a slow roll out to bring students back to the building, and so far the smooth transition has been helpful.

“We sent home guidelines and flow charts for families and that helped parents a lot for planning,” Piper said. “The kids are just happy to be back and engaging with their classmates.”
