Chautauqua County sees surge in COVID-19 cases

MAYVILLE — A surge of COVID-19 cases continues to plague Chautauqua County. The Health Department reported 32 new cases with 138 active.

The new cases come include: seven from Dunkirk, six from Jamestown, five from Fredonia, four in Lakewood, three in Forestville, two in Silver Creek and one each in Sinclairville, Van Buren Point, Brocton, Kennedy and Panama.

In addition, the hospitalization rate remains at its highest throughout the pandemic with 22 as of Tuesday.

In the north county over the last two weeks, there have been 81 new cases. At least 18 of those have been linked to a private event with seven cases are active and 11 have recovered.

In addition, the south county is facing two new major cases. There are six active cases among employees of and 18 active cases among residents associated with Tanglewood Manor. Eighteen employees and 72 residents associated with this outbreak have recovered.

Another outbreak is among employees of the city of Jamestown Fire Department. There are currently seven active cases, up one from Wednesday.

“Public safety remains our top priority, and the day-to-day fire department operations are not expected to be impacted. All stations have been proactively sanitized. The city remains committed to transparency in the interest of public health and we will continue to keep the public informed of any updates,” said city Mayor Eddie Sundquist.

“The city and its Fire Department are working collaboratively with us to contain the spread of COVID-19 related to these cases,” said Christine Schuyler, County Public Health Director. “Our investigation into this cluster will continue and anyone who is identified as a close contact to a positive case will be contacted by public health staff.”

The Municipal Building in Jamestown remains open at this time with visitors required to wear masks and social distance while accessing services.The city reminds all residents to remain vigilant ∏ wear a mask, and social distance as COVID cases rise in the county and country.

In all, there have been 887 recovered cases, 13 deaths 1,038 total confirmed cases.

Cattaraugus County also is seeking unprecedented numbers in new cases. On Wednesday evening, the department reported 17 new cases bringing the total there to 453. There are 104 active cases, 18 deaths and 331 residents who have recovered.
