COVID-19 changes Halloween hours, adds restrictions

There will be trick-or-treating in both Dunkirk and Fredonia on Saturday in addition to the Dunkirk Police Department’s National Night Out and Halloween celebration.

The Dunkirk Police Department’s National Night Out and Halloween celebration is from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Washington Park on Fifth Street in front of the gazebo. The program will be very different from past National Night Out celebrations.

Police officers, night out coordinators and firefighters will be on hand for parents to drive up on Fifth Street or walk up with their children near the gazebo and first responders will distribute Night Out items such as frisbees and footballs as they do every year for National Night Out; but this year as Halloween treats instead. Children will be asked to put their Halloween bags out the car window as they drive up or walk up and have their bags open and officers or firefighters will drop the items in their bags.

Not all towns and villages in Chautauqua County have set trick-or-treat hours this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below is a roundup of trick-or-treat times and guidelines in our readership area.

Fredonia: The village will have trick-or-treating from 2 to 5 p.m.

Dunkirk: Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Due to COVID-19 considerations, restrictions and protocols, it is up to the parents to decide whether they wish their child to participate, while residents are free to decide whether they hand out candy this year or not in light of the pandemic.

Cassadaga: Trick-or-treat hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Village officials are asking residents to set up a table in front of their house and place candy on the table so that trick-or-treaters aren’t knocking on doors or ringing door bells. Residents are also asked to sit nearby to monitor the table. Trick-or-treaters are asked to take one piece of candy from tables unless the homeowner says otherwise, to social distance from other trick-or-treatrs and wear a mask if children can’t socially distance. There will be no Halloween party at the Cassadaga Fire Hall this year.

Hanover: no set time, but follows the village of Silver Creek from 4 to 7 p.m.

Arkwright: no guidelines but encourage people to stay home due to COVID-19.

Stockton: no guidelines. The Mary E. Seymour Memorial Free Library in Stockton and the Cassadaga Branch Library will be handing out trick-or-treat bags with candy and goodies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bags will be big enough to take trick or treating.

Westfield: 6 to 8 p.m.

Cherry Creek: Town officials said during a recent board meeting they are not responsible for setting hours for trick-or-treating.

Silver Creek: Trick-or-treating will be from 4 to 7 p.m. “I would like to remind the children and the parents to be diligent, cautious and to use discretion when trick-or-treating,” Mayor Jeffrey Hornburg said. “Don’t try to go to every house in Silver Creek. I would recommend staying with people that you know, and I encourage parents to check the stash when they get home.”

Brocton: Trick-or-treating will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mayville: 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, provided state COVID-19 laws allow.

Sinclairville: The village of Sinclairville will have trick or treat hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Village officials ask trick-or-treaters to act responsibly, practice social distancing and wear face masks. The fire department will not hold its annual Halloween Party and parade.
