PORTLAND — Chautauqua County fire investigators were still looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home and injured its occupant early Thursday.

Portland volunteer firefighters were called to 8206 Campbell Road around 1:40 a.m. for a suspected structure fire. The property was fully engulfed by flames when fire officials arrived.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, Timothy Coughlin, 53, managed to escape the property but suffered burns to his hands and arms. He was taken to Westfield Memorial Hospital before being transfered to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

The severity of injuries was not released. Coughlin was the lone occupant of the home, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Portland volunteers were assisted by several surrounding fire departments.

The home and a nearby vehicle were destroyed in the fire. An investigation looking into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
