Arkwright to look at building plans in March

ARKWRIGHT — Town officials continue to consider plans to renovate several of the town buildings, with the top priority being the town hall building and the barns where they keep their plows. One of the next steps they are taking in this process is having an architect come and help them finalize what they need to do to modernize their facilities.

“It’s not a new architectural study,” said town Supervisor Brian McAvoy. “We have them coming to our March meeting, which will be more of a presentation, and we’ll discuss what we need to think about for our modern compliant town hall and barns.”

The priority for the Arkwright board is getting all on the same page for one plan, as there are many different ones they have considered thus far. McAvoy mentioned there have been many different approaches on what to do, and they’re trying to surmount each challenge one at a time.

“We’re trying to get us all on the same page for what we’ve considered so far in regards to new buildings for the town,” McAvoy said. “Projects have started and stopped, and there different approaches, but what we’re trying to do is one at a time get over some hurdles.”

As far as those hurdles go, they include where the new buildings will be, the budget for the buildings, and all coming together on a vision for them. Though they have good ideas on the outcome of all these things, they are still working to finalize specifics.

“We’re pretty sure we’re going to put the new buildings where the town buildings are now,” McAvoy said. “We don’t think we want to put them elsewhere. We want a modern version of what we have now, which means a little bigger, and a little better. It’s nothing elaborate, and based on that, we want to establish our budget and then get down to brass tax. We have to understand what we want and what we think we can afford and how that matches up with what builders provide. We have to compromise a little bit and understand what’s affordable. We’re not throwing more money at it until we establish the budget.”

The board also swore in a new highway Superintendent Lisa Waldron, and while she can officially be elected in November, McAvoy said he’s pleased with her work. “She’s doing job, and is starting off great,” McAvoy said. “She’s energetic, engaged, and wants to do the job. She’s gone out for bids for construction material, and is working with the deputy superintendent to formulate the highway and road plan coming up for construction.”

The presentation on the modernized buildings for the town of Arkwright will take place at their regularly scheduled meeting, on Monday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. where the board will also discuss business related to windmills.
