Low COVID rates seen at SUNY

Two weeks into a the spring semester and both Jamestown Community College and the State University of New York at Fredonia are reporting low numbers of new coronavirus cases. From Jan. 30 to Friday, there were a total of 26 positive cases — four from JCC and 22 at Fredonia.

“Weekly testing of all students and employees is a tremendous undertaking, but several areas and departments across campus have worked collaboratively and exhaustively to make it happen,” said Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. at the start of the semester. “Fredonia showed it can take the precautions necessary to have a successful semester, and weekly testing is one more strategy to help us achieve that this spring.”

One hundred positive cases over a two-week period will force remote-only learning at SUNY campuses. That did not happen at Fredonia or JCC in the fall, but others locations in the system — including SUNY Cortland — had runaway numbers, especially after October.

Low rates of COVID-19 in the colleges match what is happening across New York state. The seven-day average positivity rate was 3.83%, the lowest since Nov. 29. “Thanks to New Yorkers’ actions — like wearing masks, maintaining distance, and making smart decisions — hospitalizations and the positivity rate continue to head down, and the holiday surge is in our rear-view mirror,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“This progress is a testament to New Yorkers’ personal choices, and I thank the family of New York for once again putting public health first. The vaccine is the weapon that will win the war against COVID, and we have the infrastructure in place to administer hundreds of thousands of more shots as soon as supply is available. Today’s news shows that as long as New Yorkers remain Tough, Smart, United, Disciplined, and Loving, we can and will beat back COVID.”

Scheduling links for county Health Department COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be posted between noon today and 6 p.m. Wednesday. Stand-by registration links will be posted the following day. Opportunities outside of these days may be available as changes in the state’s allocation of vaccine occur. Residents are urged to check https://chqgov.com/public-health/covid-19-vaccination-clinics for more information.

On Saturday, Cattaraugus County listed 11 new cases with 240 active. Twenty-four are hospitalized and there have been at total of 4,096 cases.

Chautauqua County does not update its dashboard on weekends.
