Point Gratiot car show plans are rejected

The Lowriginal Car Show was granted a loud-speaker permit for July 18, but the Point Gratiot event was rejected during Tuesday’s Common Council meeting in Dunkirk.

Councilman-at-large Paul VanDenVouver stated at Feb. 2 council workshop, he would like all of the car shows to go to a locations like the location between Tim Hortons and the Clarion Hotel Marina & Conference Center on Lakeshore Drive as he believes that Point Gratiot, the proposed location of the car show, is being utilized for all the wrong reasons.

“I think that the park is getting overtaken by these car groups,” VanDenVouver stated. “This park is for people to utilize and walk their dogs and use it. It seems like these car shows are every month and the way they’re conducting their businesses down there with revving their engines and the loud music. There’s just a ton of complaints. They’re parked outside the park trying to get in there the night before. If they do want to have any car shows in the future I think we move them over there and alleviate the problem.”

There was some disagreement with VanDenVouver’s opinion, mostly from First Ward Councilman Don Williams Jr. and Third Ward Councilman James Stoyle. Both said not all groups should have to relocate.

“The Lakeshore Street Rod Association has been doing their car show for years and there’s never been a phone call of complaint,” Williams said. “There’s never been a problem with anything that they did down there.”

“The Lakeshore Street Rod Association is grandfathered in as far as I’m concerned,” Stoyle said. “They have never ever left that point worse than when they found it.”

The resolution was later tabled to be discussed at the Tuesday meeting where it was voted down 3-2 with the three “no” votes belonging to Stoyle, VanDenVouver and Fourth Ward Councilwoman Nancy Nichols; the loudspeaker application, however, passed 4-1 with the single “no” vote belonging to VanDenVouver.
