Blighted property in Fredonia set to come down

A house at 67 Seymour St. in Fredonia is coming down by order of the Village Board, after code enforcement declared the property blighted.

The board unanimously approved Monday a measure to dispose of waste from the demolition using municipal landfill credits. The credits come from a shared services agreement with Chautauqua County. Fredonia has 240 credits and the demolition is expected to use 80 to 100 credits.

The board’s resolution notes that there is a tax foreclosure judgment on the property, but the Chautauqua County Department of Real Property has removed it so it could be purchased by the county Land Bank at auction. The Land Bank will handle the demolition and will use state grant money to cover the costs of it.

“The Village Board believes that the current condition of the structure poses an imminent danger to the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the village of Fredonia and it should be demolished as soon as possible,” the resolution reads.

An Internet search for 67 Seymour St. turned up a listing for the home on Housinglist.com, a website that covers foreclosed properties. The home was built in 1870, contains four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and is a multi-family dwelling, according to the listing.

A blog entry from Fredonia’s Darwin Barker Museum notes the property contained a photography studio in the early 1950s.

The property also contains a barn in the rear, which looks to be already partially demolished. It is located across the street from the back entrance to Russell Joy Park.
