Gowanda gets update on building projects

GOWANDA — Although the exterior of the Gowanda High School might look normal, the inside is undergoing a lot of changes due to the capital building project the school currently has underway.

“Last summer a lot of the cool projects were done,” said Gowanda Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson. “We did a lot of work by the bridge and the field. But now we’re working inside, so it isn’t as visible.”

The high school’s library is entirely gutted, with the floors entirely stripped and getting re-done. This also goes for the high school tech room which is also in the process of being re-done. Additionally, a new chiller is being installed on the outside of the building, which according to members of the Gowanda administration, will help solve the problem of the bathroom usage at the baseball and softball fields.

“If you’re looking from the field toward the building, you’ll see a new building,” Dr. Anderson said. “That’s a chiller for climate control, but there will also be bathrooms in there so people watching baseball and softball can use that without having to go to an outhouse.”

The reason this chiller, along with the restrooms, are being attached to the school is because if it were its own separate facility. The way it’s being done, as part of the school, can be done as part of the project. The chiller is located between both fields, and will be a little bit of a walk, but will provide more access other than port-a-potties.

Throughout the school complex, ventilation units are being installed in every room and the school will also be getting new digital signage. Pylons are also being drilled outside the high school to make a canopy. The school store is moving down to the current gym, and the space vacated by the store will be part of the new office complex being installed.

The Gowanda Board of Education’s retreat will be on Wednesday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School Library.
