Mayville’s proposed budget drops tax rate

MAYVILLE — The recent revaluation in the town of Chautauqua has helped Mayor Ken Shearer propose a lower property tax rate in the village.

During a meeting last week of the Mayville Village Board, Shearer presented his proposed budget of $1.9 million general fund for the 2022-23 budget year. The budget has a levy — the amount raised by property taxes — of $797,463.

The proposed budget calls for a property tax rate of $6.40 per $1,0000 assessed valuation. This year’s budget has a property tax rate of $7.41, nearly $1 less than proposed for next year.

“That’s because of the increase in assessed value in the reassessment that was done by the town of Chautauqua,” Treasurer Jennifer Obert said.

Even though the tax rate is down, both the levy and the overall budget is higher. The current budget is $1,694,809 and the levy is $768,682.

Shearer said the Board of Trustees are holding a number of workshops to analyze his proposed budget. A finalized adjusted budget is expected to be adopted at the board’s April meeting.

Shearer said the village is still seeking federal funds to address its water. The village had to put in a new well and treat another well due to traces of perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) discovered in the water. It is believed the chemicals came from firefighting foam used during exercises at the Chautauqua Municipal Building, which took place from 2014-18.
