Gas prices jumped 20 cents at some locations in Chautauqua County on Monday, reaching $4.40 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel when including tax.

Just last week, the average price for a gallon of gas in the Jamestown area sat at $3.75, according to AAA East’s gas report. What’s more, gas was around $2.84 a gallon the week of March 8, 2021.

Locally, prices surpassed the $4 mark last Thursday. Part of the spike is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

AAA said the national average for a gallon of gas was $4.06, a “staggering” 45 cents more than a week ago, 62 cents more than a month ago and $1.30 more than a year ago.

The national average has not been this high since July 2008.

“The increase in gas demand and a reduction in total supply contribute to rising pump prices,” AAA said in a news release Monday. “But, increasing oil prices play a leading role in pushing gas prices higher. Consumers can expect the current trend at the pump to continue as long as crude prices climb.”
