HANOVER — At the Town Board meeting this month, Deputy Supervisor Lou Pelletter gave an update on the recent economic development meeting.

Pelletter gave a list of 17 minor action items and the group narrowed it down to three. While Pelletter said he’d work on the others as time permits, he said the three main areas of focus would be the sewer line underneath Routes 5 and 20 to the southside of the Seneca Development, Parson’s Pond, and the former Lakeshore Hospital.

As for the sewer line, Pelletter said he went to the Empire State Development Grant meeting and the Chautauqua County grant meeting, and what he learned is that money would be available come the fall, and that municipalities should have project ideas in mind.

“They don’t know how much and they don’t know when it’s coming, but they’re thinking the feds are going to have some money in the fall,” said Pelletter. “And they recommend that they have projects because this money will be available.”

Pelletter said he’s going to do whatever he can right now, as he anticipates the economy getting worse. He also added that he’s meeting with Economic Development Coordinator Nate Aldrich to do a study for a hotel.

“I got some specs for the sewer pipe for what the plant is able to do,” said Pelletter. “I was hoping to get the grant writer on board for that project and use some of the ARPA money to get the project going.”

For Parson’s Pond, Pelletter said if there is money out there for dredging and water retention, they can take a look at that. He’d like to take a look at Sunset Bay and Hanford Bay to take a look at any flooding risk, even if it’s just a preliminary study.

“I think we should maybe take a look at it for the last time,” said Pelleter. “We’ve talked about it; we’ve been talking about it for 100 years.”

Most importantly though, Pelletter focused on the former Lakeshore Hospital campus, and after discussing it with the county’s economic advisors, he knows something has to be done with it.

“They have to take a look at it before it ends up like the Main Street school,” said Pelleter. “I would like to push the county into saying whether it’s the IDA or whatever agency they have to look at Lakeshore Hospital to see what we can do about it.”

The next Hanover Town Board meeting will be on Monday, June 13 at 7:30 p.m.
