SHERIDAN — The eastbound lane of Interstate 90 in the town of Sheridan has reopened to traffic after a semi tanker caught fire this morning on the Route 20 overpass.

Video and photographs posted to social media showed intense flames and heavy, black smoke coming from the semi. The driver reportedly suffered injuries as a result of the crash, which occurred around 9:45 a.m.

A medical helicopter was summoned to transport one person to the hospital, though it wasn’t immediately clear if the victim was the driver of the semi or someone else. There were also reports of vehicles off the road near the interstate.

Firefighters from several departments, including Sheridan, Silver Creek and Forestville, were initially called to the scene along with county HAZMAT team members.

Due to the intensity of the flames and potential hazards, a portion of Route 20 and the eastbound lane of the interstate was closed to traffic.

Traffic is being detoured off Route 20 at Center Road in Sheridan, about four miles from the accident.
