A Sinclairville man died after the dump truck he was operating tipped over into a pond Thursday in the town of Stockton.

The accident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. at a property on Waterman Road. Volunteer firefighters, along with Chautauqua County EMS and members of the Sheriff’s Office, responded Thursday.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said William Rossow, 83, was backing a dump truck that was reportedly carrying gravel around a pond.

“The dump truck got too close to the pond bank and tipped into the pond,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Rossow reportedly became trapped inside the dump truck under the water.

“Two neighbors in the area heard the accident and were able to get Rossow out of the vehicle,” the department said.

The Sinclairville man was transported to Brooks-TLC Hospital in Dunkirk where he was later pronounced dead.

The GMC dump truck was later removed from the pond.
