GOWANDA — The Gowanda Panthers high school trap team received extreme support from the community for a can drive to raise funds for its trip to the state tournament.

The trap team collected 60,000 cans in a four-hour period, which was met with a one cent donation on each can by Can Kings. The fundraiser collected $3,600 for the trap team.

Ten students will attend the state tournament, at various levels of competition, while one student is going to observe. The state tournament is Saturday, June 10, in Cicero, just north of Syracuse. The team plans to leave on Friday in order to arrive for practices at 3 p.m. until dusk.

Students will be transported by parents and guardians to the Comfort Suites hotel in Cicero, where they will stay overnight before the competition begins.

The district covered a $45 registration fee for each of the students participating in the tournament. Ammunition cost was $1,170, which came from the allocated funds from the athletic budget. All other funds — including lodging and meals — are covered by the team’s fundraising efforts.

Gowanda ranked 10th in the state last year at the state tournament. The trap team was board approved in 2017.
