Dunkirk native marking 100th birthday this weekend

Dunkirk native Sara Sievert is celebrating her 100th birthday and a life of accomplishment and reward this month with family and friends at her home in Round Rock, Texas.
The daughter of James and Elizabeth Mancuso, she graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1943 and married Guy Sievert, also from Dunkirk, while he was home on leave during World War II. After the war he returned to his job to help manage operations at Booths Dairy and she started on the cutting room floor at Van Raalte but soon was elevated to assist the plant manager as account clerk over Imports and Exports.
When the company closed, she obtained employment as assistant to the Vice President for Finance and accounts at Fredonia State University and worked there until her retirement in 1992. While at Fredonia State, she became active in the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) union and was elected President of the local CSEA chapter, Regional Vice President and Chair of the statewide education committee.
After retirement Guy and Sara Sievert moved to Round Rock, Texas, in 1994. While there both became engaged in the Texas Senior Games which sponsors organized sports competition for seniors over 50 throughout the state and the country.
Sara, an athlete since her days as a lifeguard and an outstanding bowler in Dunkirk, participated in basketball, horseshoes, and especially swimming. After winning several gold medals at local, state, and National events, setting pool records for her age group, and joining the Masters swimming club, she was named female athlete of the year for the Texas Senior Games in 2004 and then selected for the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Husband Guy, who had established his own reputation as a champion basketball shooter, joined her in the Hall the following year. A natural administrator, Sara was soon elected as Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Texas Senior Games and served as a representative on planning boards and committees for many years after she stepped down from elected office.
On Saturday, July 19, Sara will celebrate her 100th birthday at her home in Round Rock. Her sons Guy and Ron and their wives Donna and Marcia will be there along with many of her five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, her one year old great great grandchild as well as neighbors and close friends she has made throughout her active and engaged life.
