Ruth Olmstead Newton

GERRY — Ruth Olmstead Newton was born in the Town of Gerry on March 27, 1929 to Clarence and Laura (Lammers) Olmstead. She was the eldest of five children. She married Roger M. Newton on December 26, 1945. Roger and Ruth worked on the family farm, known as Newton Brothers, along with Roger’s brothers Robert and Gordon.

Roger and Ruth had three children; William, Nancy, and Joyce. Ruth was a busy farmwife, cooking and baking, while tend-ing to the needs of her family. Her love for her children was deep. While the kids grew up knowing responsibility and accoun-tability, Ruth achieved her GED in 1960 and in 1975 became a licensed insurance agent. She was well respected by her clients because she knew building values, replacement values, and liability needs. She updated policies to assure appropriate insurance coverage was maintained. The farm also produced maple syrup and from that, Ruth made the best maple sugar and maple creamÃ-and lots of it over the years. Because of Ruth, school classes and 4-H groups were able to visit the farm and stir their own maple syrup into maple sugar candy. She was supportive of her children’s involvement in 4-H and AFS.

Ruth spent 30 years as the Entry Clerk for the Chautauqua County Fair Association as well as serving 35 years (1967-2002) as a Director. She spent hours writing out entry tags by hand. As with everything she was involved in, she gave the position her best effort. From 1960-1972+, Ruth served as the Head of the Town of Charlotte Republican Committee, encouraging people to run for office and assisting them in the petition process. She was a Director of the Chautauqua Maid Cooperative from 1967-1974+; also served as Secretary of the organization. She was a member of the Grange from age 10 until it closed. She was instrumental in having a Cousins’ Luncheon once a month at her home for many years.

After Roger died, Ruth married Gordon Newton on March 1, 1968. Besides working the farm together, they loved to travel and for many years took off in their car to various areas of the country. Ruth and Gord were close to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary when Ruth passed away on February 11, 2018 at Heritage Village in Gerry, NY.

Sweet memories of Ruth will help ease our loss. She loved flowers, having raised orchids for many years as well as hanging baskets and window boxes filled with a wide variety of flowers. She always had a vegetable garden that filled the freezer. In fact, during World War II, 4-H held a Victory Garden contest and Ruth won the Grand Prize for Chautauqua County!

She loved to quilt and every family member has a quilt made especially for them. She made the best cookies, bread, and pies. Her recipes will live on through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who learned how to bake under Grandma Ruth’s guidance.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ward, her first husband Roger, and daughter Joyce. She is survived by her hus-

band, Gordon, son Bill (Roslin), daughter Nancy (Rich); grandchildren Rochelle (Patrick), Sarah (Dustin), and Kate as well as three great-grandchildren Tricia, Trevor, and Matilda.

She is also survived by her sisters Allene, and Marge and brother Walter as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
