David A. Sheffield

He was born in Dunkirk, NY, the son of the late David J. Sheffield and the late Francine A. Sheffield-Buchanan (nee Conti).

A graduate of Dunkirk High School, David served in the United States Navy, and later served in the United States Army Reserves. He continued his education at Jamestown Community College and SUNY Fredonia, earning degrees in Accounting and Social Work. David had been employed with Lutheran Social Services as a Family Service Worker Supervisor for 19 years.

Helping people was truly David’s mission in life. He was well known for his compassion, selflessness and willingness to extend a hand to anyone in need. At many different times he happily opened his home to those in need of a safe place and guidance.

David was tremendously devoted to his work and enjoyed providing wisdom and direction to strangers and loved ones alike. He loved the Buffalo Bills, quality time with his family, fishing, golfing, and anchovies on his pizza.

David is survived by four devoted daughters, Alexis (Les) Pavlovitch, Sagan Sheffield-Smith (Christopher), Chelsea Sheffield (Alex Gizowski), and Alivia Sheffield; his adored grandchildren Ava, Addison, Aiden, Brayden and Jocilynn.

One of seven children, known to each other as “The Lucky Seven,” David is survived by siblings John (David) Sheffield, Gina (David) Kron, Barbara (David Digirolamo) Sheldon, Michael (Debra) Sheffield, Daniel (Thomas) Sheffield, and Stephen (Cheryl) Sheffield. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, July 17 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church.

After a Leukemia diagnosis in November and a successful bone marrow transplant in February, David’s latest bone marrow biopsy showed 99% donor cells and no signs of cancer. Memorial donations in David’s name can be made to Be the Match or by joining the Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry.
