Edward J. Matthews
Edward J. Matthews, 84, of Gowanda, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at his home. He was born on November 17, 1934 in Dayton, NY, son of the late Ward O. and Florence (Haberer) Matthews. He married the former Shirley Hebner who predeceased him. Mr. Matthews was a US Army Veteran and was employed as a maintenance manager at Moench Tanning in Gowanda for 35 years. He also
drove for Carrier Coach and Bluebird Coach Lines, enduring many cross country trips. He was a member of the Slovenian Club in Gowanda and was a past member of the Otto Volunteer Fire Department.Mr. Matthews is survived by a son, Michael (Christine) Matthews of Dayton, NY, and two daughters; Faith Matthews of Dayton, NY and Hope Raichlin of Dayton, NY. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.Besides his loving wife and parents, Mr. Matthews is predeceased by a son, David Matthews, and five brothers; Charles Menshel, Eugene Menshel, Deforest Matthews, Ward J.
Matthews, and Jon O. Matthews. He is also predeceased by a sister, Mary Matthews. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo or Roswell Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main St. in Gowanda.
