Gowanda, NY – Thelma J. Whipple, 97, of Gowanda, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the Gowanda Nursing Home. She was born on June 18, 1922 in Erie, PA, daughter of the late Clarence and Mabel (Post) Ames. She married Marion Whipple who predeceased her in 1984. Mrs. Whipple was active in her community, being a member of the Gowanda Free Methodist Church and the Gowanda Senior Citizens. She was also active with the Salvation Army for many years and spent 15 years with the League of Mercy and 10 years as the Home League Chaplin. She is survived by a son, David (Jan) Heeter of Hurst, TX and four daughters; Nancy Hochmuth of Gowanda, NY, Judy (Jerry) Day of Pueblo, CO, Lytha Whipple of Gowanda, NY and Sandra (Charles) Haselden of Chaffee, NY. Also surviving is one brother, William Ames of Erie, PA and 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.Besides her loving husband and parents, Mrs. Whipple is predeceased by seven brothers; Gerald, George, Robert, Donald, Raymond, Richard and Howard Ames as well as two sisters; Agnes Gardener and Alice Fernandes.Friends may call on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from 47 PM at Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 105 East Main St. in Gowanda. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at 11 AM from the funeral home.Burial will be in Jolls Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
