Gladys L. (Douglas) Pier

WESTFIELD — Gladys L. (Douglas) Pier, 81, of Westfield, formerly of Portland, N.Y., passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 10, 2020, following an extended illness.

She was born May 27, 1939, in Westfield, N.Y., a daughter to the late J. Glenn and Grace (Wester) Douglas.

Gladys graduated from Sherman High School in 1957 and started working at Welch’s in Westfield, N.Y., in administration. When she fell in love with and married the love of her life, Clyde, she stayed at her home and raised her two children.

She enjoyed square dancing, as a member of the Lake Shore Squares, participating in it for 25 years with her husband. She also enjoyed line dancing and spending the winter months in the Leesburg, Fla., area.

Gladys married Clyde in the Sherman Community Church on Aug. 8,1959. He predeceased her Dec. 19, 2017, after 58 years of marriage.

Survivors are her son, Dennis (Lisa) Pier of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Julie Graves of Los Angeles, Calif.; her six grandchildren: Roxanne McDowell, Katie Lawrence, William Pier, Tyler

Graves, Kyle Graves, and Alyssa Graves; five great grandchildren, Kylie Lawrence, Douglas

Lawrence Jr., and Klara Lawrence, Taylor McDowell and Gorman Beeson; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys is also survived by her brother, Perry (Mary Jane) Douglas of Sherman, N.Y.; three sisters: Jerry (Al) Robson of Sherman, N.Y., Glendine “Stub” Ottaway of Westfield, N.Y., and Gayle Scadden of Sherman, N.Y.; and her sister-in-law, Helen Abby of Waterford, Pa.

Preceded in death in addition to her parents and her beloved husband, is her son-in-law, Joseph Graves.

Following the guidelines and protocols administered by the Governor of New York, friends and family may call at the MORSE Funeral Home, 51 Highland Ave., Brocton, NY 14716 on Saturday, June 13, 2020, from 11 a.m. until noon, where funeral services will be held with the Rev. Larry Morrison of the Brocton Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Gladys’ honor be made to the Portland Fire Department Rescue Squad, 6841 West Main Road, Portland, NY 14769.
