Maxine M. Fitzgerald

Maxine M. Fitzgerald, 96, of Fredonia died Tuesday morning (Aug. 11, 2020) at the Chautauqua Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk.

She was born Aug. 21, 1923, in the town of Portland, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ashley and Clare (Steiert) Titus.

Maxine attended Westfield schools and graduated from Brocton High School, and was a 1945 graduate of Fredonia Normal School.

She then became a primary school teacher in Niagara Falls and Westfield. During World War II, she worked at the Curtis Wright Airplane Factory in Buffalo and was a 50 year member of the D.A.R. She was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s in Brocton and St. Joseph Church in Fredonia, and a long time volunteer at the Chautauqua County Home.

Survivors include two sons: John T. (Cynthia) Fitzgerald and James P. (Rose) Fitzgerald, both of Fredonia; six grandchildren: Gwen (Paul) Huels, Ellen (Mike) Farkas, Michael (Nina) Fitzgerald, Timothy Fitzgerald, Bridget Fitzgerald and William Fitzgerald; four great grandchildren: Gabriel, Ella, Mia and Rhys; several nieces and nephews’ and special “adopted” daughter. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Fitzgerald, who died in 1994; infant son, Timothy Fitzgerald, in 1957; and two brothers: Robert Titus and Eugene Titus.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, NY.
