James W. Dewey

James W. Dewey, 94, of Silver Creek, N.Y., passed away Friday morning, Nov. 6, 2020, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y.

He was born June 13,1926, in Delaware, Ohio, the son of the late Wesley and Hannah (Browning) Dewey. He married the love of his life, Barbara J. Lawton on Nov. 23,1949, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Silver Creek, N,Y. She preceded in death on Sept. 24, 2016.

Jim is survived by his loving daughter, Virginia (Mark) Parsons of Hamburg, N.Y.; a cherished granddaughter, Andrea (Rafael Zegarra) Parsons of Tonawanda, N.Y.; a dear brother, Donald (Janet) Dewey of Ashley, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Barbara J. Dewey; and an infant daughter, Katherine Dewey.

Jim was a graduate of the Frank B. Wilson High School in Delaware, Ohio, “class of 1944.” He lettered in basketball and tennis. He was a patriot, joining the U.S. Navy in 1944 serving in the Philippines during World War II and was honorably discharged in1946. He was called back into the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and served aboard the USS Enoree (AO-69) from 1950-52, they hauled oil between Aruba and different ports in the USA. He worked for 35 years as a crane operator for the Ford Stamping in Buffalo, N.Y., retiring in 1988.

Jim’s memberships included the Silver Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 50 year member, the Silver Creek Emergency Squad, 10 year member, the Samuel Cimino Veteran of Foreign War Post 6472, the Silver Lodge F&AM 757, a 32 Degree Mason. He was appointed grand steward of the Grand Lodge of the Chautauqua District in 1982 and 1983. Jim loved to golf and belonged to the Tri-County Country Club for over 60 years, where he served on the board for six years.

Jim enjoyed life to the fullest. He always said everyday I meet a new friend it was a great day! He considered himself blessed for having a great wife to go through life together and a loving family. He will be dearly missed by family and many great friends.

As per the family’s wishes visitation and services will be private. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery. The family suggest memorial contributions in Jim’s honor to the St. Columban’s on the Lake Retirement Home, 2546 Lake Road, Silver Creek, NY 14136 or the Silver Creek Emergency Squad, 162 Central Ave., Silver Creek, N,Y.
