Mario Serio

Mario P. Serio, age 88, died peacefully in his home in Fredonia, NY on May 9th, 2021 following a battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife Marianne (Dybka) Serio of Fredonia, NY and his brother Joseph Serio of Dunkirk, NY. He is also survived by sister in law Theresa (David) Pacos and brother in law Stanley (Jaclyn) Dybka and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by dear friends Laila Denoya of Fredonia, NY, John and Betty Jo Zmuda of Dunkirk, NY and Dr. Tat Sum Lee of Fredonia, NY, among many other lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters: Rose (Serio) Granata, Arlene (Serio) Privateer, Mary (Serio) Cardella and Josephine (Serio)Taddio.

Mario was born June 29, 1932 in Dunkirk, NY the son of the late Nicholas and Jennie (Lima) Serio.

He attended and graduated from St. Mary’s in Dunkirk, NY. Mario joined the Army and served in the Korean conflict in 1950-1952. He attended Fredonia State University following his Army Service.

On May 8, 1982, he married the love of his life, Marianne Serio.

Mario enjoyed flying model airplanes, hunting, fishing, and casino trips. He had a passion for creative and historical writing and a love for music and entertainment. His favorite musician was Frank Sinatra and he could often be found singing the lyrics to “I Did It My Way.” He could often be found getting coffee in the morning, entertaining his friends with various anecdotes.

Mario worked for many years and retired at ECCB. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member of Great Belt Seniors and Dunkirk Seniors, among many other organizations.

Following the guidelines and protocols administered by the governor of New York, family and friends may call Friday, May 14, from 4-7 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 145 East Main Street, Fredonia. Full military honors will be accorded by the Dunkirk Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Fredonia.
