RIPLEY — Kenneth Allen Markstein, 73, of West Main Street, Ripley, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Sept. 6, 1947, in Hartford, Conn., the son of the late John P, and Mary (Waitkus) Markstein.

Ken attended Cheney Tech High School in Manchester , Conn., where he received his diploma. Following graduation, he enlisted to serve his Country with the U.S. Air Force from 1970 until his honorable discharge in 1976.

Ken began his 40 years of employment with the Rex Lumber Company, Inc. located in South Windsor, Conn. On Aug. 25, 2002, he married his sweetheart, Joan Shreve, of Westfield, N.Y., and were blessed with nearly 19 years together.

Ken was an avid NASCAR and Formula 1 racing fan and a huge follower of the U. Conn. Women Husky basketball team. He loved traveling and spending time with his wife and occasionally tried their luck at the Casino. He will be missed by his canine companions: Jake, Max and Tyler.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan of Ripley; his son Gregory (Erin) Thompson of Maine; and two cherished grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his two brothers and their wives: John (Martha) Markstein and Michael (Jennifer) Markstein.

A celebration of life will be held at the Ripley Fire Hall, Saturday, Aug. 7, at noon.
