Richard Witt Clifton

Richard Witt Clifton passed away from complications of Parkinson’s Disease on June 24, 2022, at Brookdale Monument Valley Memory Care in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born on June 18, 1943, in North Carolina and grew up in northern Virginia.

He attended Lock Haven University where he pursued his life-long interest in education. He was a proud and dedicated educator and moved to Western NY where he earned his master’s degree in education from SUNY Fredonia. Rick was proud of his long tenure as an administrator for the Dunkirk Public Schools and was a pivotal part of bringing Head Start programming to Dunkirk.

Rick loved to walk in the woods and was a prolific wildlife photographer. His photos of western New York wildlife and flora were published in many wildlife magazines and for this, he was thrilled.

He was one of the founding members of Camp Reno, Ripley, N.Y., and many a beautiful day was spent walking the grounds, repairing the camp and spending time with good friends.

Rick was an avid hockey fan and could often be found enjoying a Sabers game with his beloved wife Terry.

Rick relocated to Colorado, to live near his son, Andy when his Parkinson’s Disease required specialty care. He spent the last year of his life enjoying the Rocky Mountains, going out for diner breakfasts and spending precious time with his son.

Rick is predeceased by his parents, Murphy and Mildred Clifton; his brother, Steven Clifton; and sister, Kate Bruner.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years Terry (Wolfenden) Clifton.

He leaves behind his daughters: Megan (Bipin) Mistry of Needham, Mass., and Erin (Kirk) Harrison of Fredonia, N.Y.; son, Andrew Clifton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; as well as several adoring grandchildren.

A celebration of life will take place this summer.
