Marching orders

In response to your article “Sour Grapes” (Sept. 27), I wish to respond.

I am the treasurer of the American Legion Hanover Memorial Post 148 in Silver Creek. I was participating in the parade at the Grape Festival in the color guard.

We have always led the parade and we always show up a short time before the parade begins. About the paperwork: I went to the headquarters and was told we were not on the list.

After the parade, I returned and heard that the proper forms were not turned in. I also heard the American Legion Post 148, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6472 and the AMVETS Post 6472 never received the forms. I can see one, but not all.

The comment made that we appeared to be drinking was completely false. I was there at the beginning and did not see anyone of our marchers have a drink. One official said that we got argumentative and guess we did a little bit because we felt it was a slap in the face by officials running the parade.

As was said, we have members of our clubs as parade officials who should have known the protocol.

The sheriff’s department was called and handled the situation properly and we did march by ourselves a short time before the parade started. Once the sheriff was called, we did have the threat of being arrested. It is interesting that we did march in front of the parade (before it started) but were still recognized when going past the reviewing stand.

Such a simple solution turning into this.
