We’re going to have healthy holidays

Well, we’re in the holiday season. I was invited to eat with my adopted family. The food was delicious and plentiful. I even got a dish to take home. Then my sister Jo gave me some leftovers from their food. I used to take home the carcass and make soup. Now they keep the carcass and make their own soup. I talked myself right out of my bonus soup. But this time, I got fresh turkey, the neck and liver. My soup is delicious!

John Yaeger gave me a few meals, too. Then the girlfriend of the young man across the hall brought me over some goodies, too. Her cinnamon rolls were unbelievable! I used to give them food. Now they give me food! I guess being 90 isn’t so bad after all.

I’ve got a beautiful love story to tell you later on in the holiday. I’m a romantic, I love stories like these.

Now I’m going to make you laugh! A few minutes ago I couldn’t find my glasses. I looked in every room in vain so I went back to my prayer, “Sweet Jesus, I can’t find my glasses. I don’t know where they are, but you do. Please show me where they are.”

I looked down on my chest and there they were. I was wearing them. Old age can be funny.

I thought that during the holidays I’d tell you some things that are bad for you and some things that are good for you. I’m getting my information from a good source, Nutrition Action. Did you know a serving of Kung Pao chicken has 1,600 calories and 2,600 mg. of sodium? Here are some junk foods you should stay away from: Buitoni premium frozen meals, DiGiorno four cheese pizza and cheesy breadsticks, Keebler Zesta saltine crackers, Starbucks reduced fat cinnamon swirl coffee cake and Sara Lee simple sweet pies. If you decide to eat them, that’s up to you, but know what you’re doing.

For those of you who have cancer or diabetes, did you know that Nutrasweet and Sweet ‘n low may promote those conditions? But Truvia seems to be safe.

If you’re in the habit of eating Campbell’s soups, you should know an average cup of regular condensed soup contains 810 mg. of sodium and if you eat the whole can that’s 2,050 mg. of sodium. The following are better for you: Campbell’s Healthy Request soups, or soups by Amy’s, or McDougall’s Health Valley, Pacific Foods or Trader Joe’s.

Or you can do what I do. Every once in awhile I buy a cooked chicken. I eat the dark meat (that’s my favorite), then I make several sandwiches with white meat and then with the carcass and the rest of the white meat, I make soup. I put in catsup for flavor. I don’t look at how much salt is in the catsup because I don’t want to know. At my age, I feel I can cheat a little bit and enjoy.

When I eat out, I never ask my hostess how much salt is on the turkey or on the meat. I have two reasons for this. I don’t want her to feel guilty or responsible for my health, and two, I want to enjoy the normal once in awhile. It works for me.

In my next column, I’ll write about what’s good for you. Some news is for caution and some is for better health and eating.

We’re going to have a healthy holiday!
