Getting by with a lot of help from my friends

People continue being good to me. On Sunday, a senior citizen at church baked a chocolate cake because she knows I love chocolate. During the break between service and Sunday school class, she cut off a generous piece and delivered it to me. That’s what I call service! Then when I got home, John came over to take me shopping. We usually go on Saturday, but if he has to work on Saturday, he arranges for me to go with someone else or takes me on Sunday. He even puts my groceries away! He and his girlfriend also bring me cooked food. My appetite is not as good as it used to be. What I used to eat in one meal, I now eat in two or three meals. When I picked berries on the farm, I used to bring three to five sandwiches, sometimes more. My family accused me of having hollow legs! My stomach used to be hollow, too. I loved working on the farm! I ate my share of berries and still picked a lot of them! I liked riding on the back of the truck, too. We didn’t have a car then, so that was a treat. Blackberry pie is still my favorite.

This morning, I finished my taxes. I changed my tax preparer because she lives across the street. It’s tough not having a car! Yesterday, Sandy Pilgrim took me to the doctor’s. I don’t know what I’d do without her! She’s so patient! She carries my oxygen and places it between my feet in the car. Paul Narraway even warms up the seat for me when he picks me up for church. I’m really getting spoiled! What would we do without all the help we get?

I admire my sister Jo. She’s 94 and lives alone. She vacuums her rugs and scrubs her kitchen floor. Her daughter washes her clothes and does her shopping for her and her daughter’s husband, Jim, does errands. They all cooperate. Oh yes, and Jo still makes good soup. Neither one of us drives anymore.

We were born in America and so made in U.S.A. is still good stuff! Every once in a while, I have to give everyone credit!

I am so dependent now. I have to show appreciation. It encourages me when people tell me they are encouraged by my column! Life is good. Do you know what makes a good life? Learn to love serving others. We have a wonderful example in Jesus! He is so humble! I get a big kick out of those who say, “I’m so proud of my humility!” Humility is its own reward!

Weren’t you surprised to see the snow again? I watched it come down Thursday, huge flakes. Before long, the tree limbs were outlined with snow again. The roofs are covered again. Oh, well I can’t complain. We had a mild winter. I just wish I could get my hands warm again! I tuck them under my shirt, but they don’t stay warm!

I know what I’ll do – I’ll make some hot cocoa. The only problem is then I use my cup to warm up my hands, and in no time my hot chocolate is cold! Sometimes you can’t win for losing. We used to say that all the time.

I can’t get over this weather. I’m freezing all the time. My fingernails are purple and blue. I like both colors, but not on my fingernails! I had to get out a heating pad! We don’t know what to expect anymore. I wonder what our summer is going to bring. Oh, well, never a dull moment! Could be worse.
