Highway department improvements approved

GOWANDA – The highway department in the village of Gowanda will be seeing some improvements from resolutions passed at the village board meeting.

The village board approved the purchase of a new skid steer which will be purchased for the price of $40,934. With the trade in of the old skid steer, the total purchase price the village will pay is $28,734. The purchase will be made with money available through the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program. The skid steer will be purchased from Boschman Services.

The board also approved Stroud Electric for $9,800 for electrical upgrades at the highway barn. The board previously got quotes last year for the repairs.

“We really have to get this moving,” Mayor Heather McKeever said.

There were some questions regarding some of the bids and whether if they included labor in the bid price or if it was an additional expense. The price includes replacing the lights in the barn. The village snow plow also needs to be repaired. The 2008 plow is currently being looked at and the price will be determined. According to McKeever, the estimated cost could be up to $3,000.

“It’s just something we have to do. We’re down to one snow plow right now,” McKeever said.

In other business, Gowanda Police Officer in Charge Joseph Alessi reminded residents to lock their cars due to recent vehicle break ins. The town also approved Jack Gaylord Jr. as a co-ed basketball assistant coach. The town also approved volunteers Jay Ondus and Harry Rasey for second- and third-grade basketball fundamentals and to appoint Janet Vogtli as an alternate on the planning board for a four-year term.
