Twenty years ago — 1997

Moving the Sinclairville Free Library to a new location is one of the possibilities being explored by a task force that included library and village board members. Robert Kochersberger, president of the library board and chairman of the task force explained, “We can stay where we are now, in the basement of the village hall and look to expanding our existing facilities; move to a new location; or find an ideal site and build a new facility.” Building a new facility is receiving a great deal of support among the task force members.

Thirty years ago — 1987

Bishop Edward D. Head, DD, bishop of Buffalo, has appointed the Rev. Gerald P. Sheehan as the pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Forestville, effective Nov. 28. The Rev. Wallace T. Borucki has been the temporary administrator of the parish since May of last year. Father Sheehan, who was born in South Buffalo, was ordained to the Catholic priesthood by Bishop James A. McNulty in St. Joseph’s New Cathedral on Feb. 22, 1964. He was appointed to his first pastorate on Sept. 4, 1982 when he assumed the pastorate of St. John Bosco Church in Sheridan, which he will retain together with the pastorate of St. Rose of Lima.

Forty years ago — 1977

Voters overwhelmingly approved a new K-6 elementary school which will be constructed adjoining the present Silver Creek Junior-Senior High School building. The proposed swimming school project did not fare as well, however, and was defeated by a slim margin.

Fifty years ago — 1967

Chautauqua County’s supervisors, former supervisors, supervisors-elect, other county and town officials and their spouses — 281 in all — attended the annual supervisors banquet held recently. Especially singled out for honors were retiring supervisors Harold Legters of Clymer after 25 years and Arkwright Supervisor Earl Cardot — 24 years.
