Engine Co. 1 of the Dunkirk City Fire Department was recently relocated. The East Fourth Street station moved to Fire Headquarters on Eagle Street. The move is being made to improve response times and the city’s insurance rating. The west side of the city has been without an in-service engine company since 1988, when Engine Co. 2 was taken out of service. Engine Two was stationed at the Eagle Street headquarters. Moving Engine 1 created some concerns among the volunteer firemen. Hose Co. No. 1 volunteers have served the city well for more than 130 years. Engine One was the only unit assigned to the East Fourth Street station, meaning the building will now be vacant.

The owners of a historic Central Avenue home in Dunkirk that was destroyed in a fire in November are planning to rebuild the structure. Lawrence Roesler, president of the Multi-Family Housing Corporation, said the dwelling, known as the Day residence at 1138 Central Ave., will be rebuilt, but on a more modest scale. It would have cost an estimated $500,000 to rebuild the house exactly. Instead, the company plans to build a structure that will cost an estimated $150,000, noting that the new house will contain three four-bedroom apartments. The original Day house was built in the early 1800s.

Turmoil has been evident in Dunkirk city government since New Year’s Day and it shows no signs of diminishing. Responding to Councilman William Larson’s attempts to prevent Mayor Gilbert Snyder from speaking at council meetings, Mayor Snyder said, “I’ve had just about all of him (Mr. Larson) that I can take.” The two have not been on the best of terms for some time. Mr. Larson resigned as city engineer last March 1 after a dispute with the mayor.

The newly-organized Fredonia Sportsman’s Club, with the assistance of the Canadaway Creek Game Management area of the state Conservation Department, is in the process of putting up about 50 predator-proof wood duck houses. This is the first step in the club’s program to help establish a larger wood duck colony in the county.
