Twenty years ago — 1998

On Feb. 1, area resident Kay Barlow Collins became the voice behind the world of arts and humanities to the nation. Her new show, The Chautauqua Edition, debuted on WQLN-FM in Erie, Pa., to be followed by national distribution via National Public Radio. A dream that stems from her position as executive director of the Adams Art Gallery in Dunkirk, Ms. Barlow Collins has lobbied for support from New York State for recognition as to the importance of her project through funding. She became interested in radio through the production of 30-second commercial spots for programs at the gallery.

Thirty years ago — 1988

The Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce recently honored its first Citizen of the Year during its annual banquet at the Slovenian Club. Chosen for the award was Art Palumbo, who operates Art’s Grocery in the village. Taking part in the award presentation were Robert L. Pass, president of the Chamber Board of Directors and chairman of the dinner; and Buffalo Mayor Jimmy Griffin, the guest speaker. Other members of the banquet committee were Patricia Kota, Janice Wells, Joan Dean and Carl Kluckhohn.

Forty years ago — 1978

Dunkirk Mayor Gilbert Snyder recently revealed that he is seriously considering running for Congress in November. The startling announcement came during a conversation with reporters in his city hall office. Mayor Snyder said he is ready and willing to accept the Republican nomination to oppose incumbent Rep. Stanley Lundine, a Democrat who previously served as mayor of Jamestown. “I’m disenchanted with Lundine,” Mayor Snyder said. “He left a lot to be desired. He talks one way to businessmen and another way to labor.”

Fifty years ago — 1968

A person familiar to millions of television viewers, CBS news commentator Richard C. Hottelet will address the members and guests attending the 64th annual banquet of the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce to be held Feb. 22. Over 600 members of the chamber are expected to attend.
