Dunkirk Mayor Gilbert Snyder announced today that he is appointing Leonard Speziale, twice a political adversary, to replace Alfred Saletta as the city’s harbormaster. Mr. Saletta was named harbormaster in January, but resigned last month. “He has a boat and he knows the harbor,” Mayor Snyder said in explaining his reasons for selecting Mr. Speziale for the job that pays $500 per year. Mr. Speziale is a Dunkirk jeweler who ran for mayor as an independent against Mr. Snyder in both 1975 and 1977. He is known as an avid boater and spends many summer days aboard his cabin cruiser, “Dear Heart.” Mayor Snyder said that a “mutual friend” suggested the name of Mr. Speziale as harbormaster.
