Twenty years ago — 1998

Organizations and individuals turned out to express concern and to protest the proposed closing of the west bridge on Cemetery Road. A bypass road is being considered that would start at Route 310 and connect with Cemetery Road, creating a dead end. The reason for the bypass is that it would cost an estimated $400,000 to replace the road’s east and west bridges with the west span considered to be in serious shape. The town of Stockton’s share in the cost would be significant. Heavy opposition to a bypass plan is being voiced and a second opinion called for.

Thirty years ago — 1988

Elmer Horey of 135 Forest Place, Fredonia is the new commander of the Chautauqua County Chapter of American Ex-Prisoners of War. He took over the post following the death of the former commander, Rolland Kinney, on April 28. Mr. Kinney, Mr. Horey and Larry Anderson decided to start the local chapter last November after attending a reunion of former Stalag 17B prisoners of war and meeting with other POWs in Buffalo. It has 23 members and meets every two months in Jamestown.

Forty years ago — 1978

In one of the most eventful meetings in the history of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club, Dr. Donald J. Lehr, an associate professor of psychology at Fredonia State, was named “Lion of the Year” and the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lioness Club was chartered with 31 members and its first president, Joanna Banach. More than 125 guests attended the meeting held at the White Inn. Seven new Lions Club members were installed.

Fifty years ago — 1968

Mrs. Lynn Jankowksi, wife of City Judge August R. Jankowski, will be one of the guests on the nationally-syndicated Virginia Graham “Girl Talk” television shows which originates in New York City. It is part of the “Dialing for Dollars” television show seen locally on Channel 7. Mrs. Jankowski, who is a professional singer, opens the program with a song. Judge Jankowski has been invited to the Channel 7 studio and will be interviewed by Liz Dribben prior to the “Girl Talk” segment.
