Twenty years ago — 1998

Brocton Central School students James Naumoff, Dan O’Malley and Juli Rabb, who are part of the school’s economic and vocational math classes, won top prize in the New York State Stock Market Game 200 sponsored by Buffalo State University College and the Buffalo News. This past spring, the Brocton Central team competed against other high school teams throughout Western New York. In addition to winning certificates of achievement, the three students were presented with a cash prize of $100 for their winning efforts.

Thirty years ago — 1988

From Just Between Us ….. A flowering dogwood tree has been planted on the grounds of St. Mary’s School for the Deaf — Dunkirk Educational Resource Facility, Bennett Road, Dunkirk by a group of friends of the late Judith (Renswick) Geiben. Mrs. Geiben, who died Jan. 29, 1988, was a graduate of St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo. A plaque dedicating the tree to Mrs. Geiben will be mounted near the tree.

Forty years ago — 1978

Dunkirk’s hope for a major downtown department store was dimmed when the Dunkirk Urban Renewal Agency voted 4-3 to designate the heart of the last commercial development site for a proposed medical center between Park Avenue and Deer, East Third and Fourth streets. “We have offices and no shopping,” City Treasurer Norman Woloszyn said. “You might as well go shop in Fredonia.” Mayor Gilbert Snyder replied, “There is only so much commercial development that an area can handle. Half of Dunkirk is in the lake. Fish don’t buy neckties.”

Fifty years ago — 1968

Roy J. Schrader was named Citizen of the Year posthumously by the Greater Silver Creek Area Chamber of Commerce during its annual banquet at the Colony House Restaurant. Charles Hughes, a former recipient of the award, made the presentation to the widow, Mrs. Agnes Schrader. Mr. Schrader was a charter member of the Silver Creek Chamber and had served as past president and director. Active in many civic groups, he served on the Silver Creek Board of Education from 1942-1954. He died in July 1967.
