Twenty years ago — 1999

The Jamestown Community College North County Training and Conference Center was officially opened with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the Bennett Road facility in Dunkirk. The center includes a computer lab, classrooms, a multipurpose room, conference rooms, offices and a distance-learning facility. At the ceremony, the North County Chamber of Commerce and other community agencies were recognized for their involvement in making the center a reality.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Conrad D. Howard, personnel and purchasing manager, Belknap Business Forms at Westfield, recently earned the business forms and systems industry’s most prestigious designation — status as a Certified Forms Consultant. Mr. Howard joined Belknap Business Forms in 1984 as personnel manager. The firm, founded in 1960, manufactures custom business forms with more than 120 employees and sales in excess of $9 million annually. Mr. Howard also serves as president of the Mayville Volunteer Fire Department.

Forty years ago — 1979

A public hearing has been scheduled on a proposed new section of the city code that would give the city a mechanism for preserving historical buildings in Dunkirk. The proposed chapter of the code would call for a creation of the five-member “Dunkirk Landmark and Preservation Board,” which would have the authority of designating landmarks and historic buildings in the city. Owners of buildings that are designated as historic landmarks would be required to seek board approval for demolition of exterior alterations of the structures.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Harry B. Hickey, 233 Central Ave., Fredonia was sworn in recently as officer-in-charge of the Fredonia Post Office. Mr. Hickey has worked at the post office since May 1932. He has been assistant postmaster in Fredonia for the past 10 years. Postmaster Earl Sardeson of Maple Avenue, Fredonia will retired from the position.
