Twenty years ago — 1999

Dunkirk Mayor Robert Kesicki is working with Fieldbrook Farms Ice Cream Co. to put a plan in place this week to address the money owed to the city for water and sewer services. The ice cream company is about a year behind on its water and sewer payments according to the mayor, who estimated the city is owed about $225,000. A $9,000 check was recently received. Mayor Kesicki said he is actively pursuing the matter and a mutually acceptable plan should be in place by the end of the week.

Thirty years ago — 1989

From Just Between Us ….. Rebecca M. Burghardt of Silver Creek has been selected as a national outstanding campus leader and will be included in the 1989 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Burghardt, she is a sophomore in the travel and tourism program at Paul Smith College of Arts and Sciences.

Forty years ago — 1979

The grand opening of the new Bells Plaza store at East Fourth and Main streets was held recently. The new Bells store replaces the former Lake Shore Drive East Loblaw store which has since closed. The new store has eight checkout counters equipped with electronic registers. The 19,100 square foot sales area offers expanded lines in all grocery and meat selections. The new Bells supermarket displays a cheerful sun yellow and orange color scheme.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Nancy Jelonek, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold P. Jelonek, 666 Brigham Road, Dunkirk has been selected Student of the Week. Nancy, presently ranked third academically in the senior class of Dunkirk High School, is business editor of the yearbook, secretary of the National Honor Society and also is a member of the Girls D Club, American Field Service and Future Teachers of America. She will attend Fredonia State University College in the fall to major in elementary education.
