Twenty years ago — 1999

Plans for an espresso shop at 715 Central Ave. received approval from the Dunkirk Planning Board. Board members unanimously approved a request from Mark A. Christopher on behalf of Renaissance of Western New York to operate a SegaFredo Expresso shop in the former Cardinal Mindszenty manse. The business will be a franchise in the SegaFredo chain. The plans call for employing local people and giving a percentage of the profits to the Christopher Wellness Center.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The cardboard recycling factory planned for the Dunkirk area “is very much alive and on track.” The firm known as Trans-Rim still expects to break ground this summer for the $150-million project, which will employ about 140 people. The company has an option on 60 acres of land in the North County Industrial Park. The $150,000 feasibility study for utilities for Trans-Rim, as well as the new industrial park access road, also is on track.

Forty years ago — 1979

Semi-pro football in Dunkirk this summer? The OBSERVER has learned that the Dunkirk-Fredonia area is being seriously considered as a future home for semi-pro football, Atlantic Football Conference style. The AFC could place a team in the area as early as this summer. A high-ranking AFC official visited Dunkirk recently and hinted that the league’s organizational meeting in Pittsburgh on April 7 may produce an opening for a new team. At least one of the current eight franchises was termed “shaky” by the spokesman.

Fifty years ago — 1969

The proposed constitution and by-laws for the Dunkirk Youth Jury have been approved, according to Dunkirk Youth Bureau Director Patrick Bailey. Election of officers to serve on the executive board of the youth jury was held with William Barthold appointed chairman of the group. Lawrence Przybyla was named vice chairman; Katherine Lasky, secretary; Mark Woods, treasurer; Barbara Ronan, court clerk director; and David Buffa, youth counselor.
