Twenty years ago — 1999

Crews have begun demolition work to make way for a new CVS Pharmacy at the corner of Fourth and Main streets in the city of Dunkirk. Work began with the demolition of the the former Hose Co. No. 1 building. The former Movies and More/Adams Furnishings building and the former Iglesias Getsemani church building will also be demolished. Glitz and Associates of Ohio plans to construct the 10,125-square foot CVS.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Henry R. Serafin, president of WBUZ Radio licensed by the FCC to Fredonia, will appeal the recent FCC decision not to renew his license to operate. The appeal is with the Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., a Civil Court, not an administrative hearing as with the FCC. According to Mr. Serafin, the administrative law judge of the FCC rejected testimony from some witnesses who testified in his behalf. Pending the appeal, WBUZ will remain on the air.

Forty years ago — 1979

Patricia Abram, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Abram, Center Road, Sheridan, has been selected Student of the Week. Patricia is the top-ranking student in the senior class at Silver Creek Central School, majoring in bookkeeping, secretarial science and home economics, with an overall average of 93 percent. Patricia works afternoons at Citibank. She plans to attend Mesa Community College in Arizona in September to major in secretarial science.

Fifty years ago — 1969

By March 1, 1969, more than 2,600 volunteer hours had been clocked by young women in the yellow and white “Candy Stripe” uniforms of the Brooks Hospital junior volunteers. The present group of 21 volunteers to be trained for this service will soon be joined by 27 more eager, enthusiastic area 16-year-olds interested in pursuing a career in the health field. The junior volunteer program is administered and partially financed by the women’s auxiliary of the hospital.
