Twenty years ago — 1999

The elimination of Quick Draw is no April Fool’s Day joke for regular customers of the popular but controversial New York State Lottery game. The Quick Draw screens went blank at midnight today at bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and other establishments where the game has been played for the past four years. Quick Draw players can blame Gov. George Pataki for eliminating the state Lottery game. The game has drawn criticism from opponents who say it contributes to the destructive habits of habitual gamblers.

Thirty years ago — 1989

The AAA Mobile Power Wash and Detail Service Center has begun operations at 180 Lincoln Ave., Dunkirk, effective March 1. It is located in the former Koch Brewery building and is part of the New Enterprises (incubator) program. The company currently has 12 employees and is the only cleaning service in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties that uses the patented Chemex Washing System. It’s the largest (8,000 square feet) detailing and hand-washing facility in Western New York.

Forty years ago — 1979

The Patterson Library Art Gallery in Westfield will exhibit some 20 paintings by Ethelyn Z. “Eazy” Lyman of Silver Creek from April 2-27. Many of the paintings will feature scenes from Allegany State Park. Mrs. Lyman, who is mainly a self-taught artist, has won many awards at local events and competitions. She uses mostly the medium of acrylic, but also some oils, pastel and water colors.

Fifty years ago — 1969

George Burns Jr., 13 Carol Ave., Fredonia, a teacher of mathematics and science at Cardinal Mindszenty High School, has been notified that he has been awarded a National Science Foundation Institute scholarship in earth science for the summer of 1969 at Western Washington State College in Bellingham, Wash. He was chosen as one of 35 from more than 600 applicants throughout the United States. Accompanying him will be his wife, Rosamond, and their five children.
