Twenty years ago — 1999
It’s not easy to travel 679 miles with no money and no vehicle. But “Mandy,” a 60-lb. labrador collie mix that is being cared for by the Chautauqua County Humane Society in Falconer, did just that. A computer chip in the dog’s shoulder led a Humane Society worker to her owner, Angela Real of Greenville, S.C. She had no idea how in the world her dog ended up in Chautauqua County, especially since she has a 5-foot high fence around a big backyard. Mrs. Real speculated that someone must have taken the dog.
Thirty years ago — 1989
Student of the Week is Bradley Emery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Emery of Felton Road, Westfield. He is a senior at Westfield Academy & Central School, majoring in math, science and language. Bradley is president of his senior class and served in the same capacity his sophomore and junior years. He is a member of the National Honor Society and lettered in varsity basketball and football. Bradley plans to continue his education in the field of mathematics at Ohio Northern University.
Forty years ago — 1979
It’s taken three tries over the past month, but Graf Furniture of Dunkirk has the green light to develop plans for a new store — plus a second commercial building — on a site on Deer Street between EastThird and East Fourth streets in the city’s urban renewal area. The company’s proposal features a furniture store with 23,600 square feet of space and an adjacent 20,000 square foot building that could be divided to suit the needs of merchants. Combined, the two buildings will form one of the largest developments in the city’s renewal program.
Fifty years ago — 1969
Dr. Oscar E. Lanford, president of Fredonia State University College, has officially announced the naming of the fine arts facility on campus. It has been officially designated the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center, which honors the youngest son of New York State Gov. Nelson E. Rockefeller, who disappeared in 1961 during an anthropological expedition in New Guinea.
