Twenty years ago — 1999

When the University at Buffalo Bulls take the field on Sept. 11 for their first game as a member of the NCAA football’s Division 1-A, Pine Valley graduate Josh Roth will be among them. The 5-11 junior fullback led the Bulls in rushing last season with 806 yards and averaged 5.1 yards per carry. Roth also caught nine passes for 82 yards and scored eight touchdowns in UB’s last season at the Division 1-AA level. In effect, Roth has gone from a Class D high school to a 1-A college.

Thirty years ago — 1989

Those U.S. veterans who received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in service can now have a special auto license tag. A bill recently passed into law in Albany now permits the issuing of plates to those wounded in military service. The plates will carry a line saying “Purple Heart” followed by four digits. There is an annual $15 fee for the plates in addition to the regular registration fee plus a one-time application fee and plate charge.

Forty years ago — 1979

“Why I Enjoy Living in New York” was the name of the essay which brought honorable mention to Karyl Lyn Maloney, 18, in the Miss Empire State Pageant recently held in Albany. Miss Maloney, the “I Love New York” Winter Festival Queen from Chautauqua County, compared New York to living in Portugal. She was an Americans Abroad Student to Portugal during the summer of 1978. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Maloney of South Shore Drive, Sunset Bay, she received a trophy and a certificate. She is a freshman business major at Jamestown Community College.

Fifty years ago — 1969

Hot grease was reported as the cause of a recent fire which resulted in heavy damage at the Village Squire Restaurant, located below street level at 22 West Main St., Fredonia and the Town ‘n Country by Walt’s Clothing Store located directly over the restaurant kitchen at 18 West Main St. The clothing store had the bulk of the damage. The fire occurred during one of the busiest dinner times at the restaurant. All patrons at the restaurant were ushered to safety at the outbreak of the fire.
